One of the country's most genuine and singular poetic voices of all time. Love, homeland and Indians –among other topics- have been the centerpiece of his poetic works. He was born in Cuales on March 3, 1908. He attended both elementary and junior high school in his hometown. He started showing his talent as a writer at a very early age. He joined the political struggle of his country at 15 and in 1923 he founded the Independent Association in Cuales.Despite being a highly educated man, he was more of a self-taught individual. He began working as a journalist for Democracy newspaper in 1927. He also worked as reporter, editor, op-ed writer and columnist for several publications in Puerto Rico, the United States and Cuba. He had a hands-on participation in Atalayismo, an avant-garde movement that saw the light of day in 1928. His first political speeches date back to 1926. By 1930, he was an outstanding member of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party. He took part in the attack to the island nation's capitol in 1932. He visited the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba. He took part in Cuba's 1935 general strike and was sent to jail. Back in Puerto Rico, he kept on his struggle as a member of the Nationalist Party. He took on the political struggle for the independence of Puerto Rico. His personal sacrifice for the independence of his loved island hoisted him as a historic figure. His excellent poetic work has given him a top-tier spot in the history of Puerto Rico's literature as one of the most original poets that ever was.
