Explore Jamaica's Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park

The Caribbean is famous for its white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters, but ecotourism enthusiasts will also find numerous natural attractions in the region that will fascinate them, one of which is the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park in Jamaica. This park showcases some of the Caribbean island's most spectacular scenery and stands out as a paradise for ornithologists and botanists.
The park covers an area of 41,198 hectares and includes the highest point in Jamaica: Blue Mountain Peak with a height of 2,256 meters. Founded in 1992, it is the only national park in the country and is world famous for its biodiversity. It is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna, including the largest butterfly in the western hemisphere, the Jamaican black bird, the Jamaican hutia and others.
If you enjoy bird watching, the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park is one of the largest migratory bird sites in the Caribbean. Each year, hundreds of birds come to the park to escape the winter during the month of October, including hawks, merlins and kingfishers.
The best way to explore this paradise is on foot. With more than 15 kilometers of hiking trails, it is a perfect place to take photographs, with exceptional sunrises and sunsets.
The park has three recreation areas: Holywell, Portland Gap and Blue Mountain Peak Trail. The Holywell area has five trails that will allow you to enjoy an abundance of tropical plants: the Blue Mahoe Trail, the Oatley Mountain Trail, the Waterfall Trail, the Shelter Trail and Wagwater Trail.
From the aŕea of Holywell starts the coffee tour, an excursion that will allow you to tour the Twyman coffee farm and learn about coffee growing. The tour ends at Twymans Coffee packing house, where you can enjoy a steaming cup of delicious coffee, relax and sample and purchase coffee.
One of the most popular trails within the park is the Blue Mountain Peak Trail, a trail located near Penlyne Castle, St. Thomas Parish and is the route to the highest point in Jamaica. The round trip takes approximately 7 hours so it is recommended to start the hike early in the morning. Along the trail you will find colorful wild flowers and hundreds of ferns. An important part of the species is composed of endemic orchids and bromeliads.
