1997. During general elections held in March, the FMLN grabs 27 seats, one shy of ARENA. In the municipal elections, the party teamed up with other political forces to nab the capital’s mayor office and in other five major towns. The UN keeps a mission in the country to check the enforcement of the peace agreements.

1997. In May, small-scale armed clashed occurred between Honduran and Nicaraguan gunboats in the Gulf of Fonseca. The conflict stemmed from unresolved negotiations among Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras over the boundaries of jurisdictional waters in that particular area.

1994. Armando Calderon Sol becomes president of the republic after ARENA’s landslide win in the presidential, legislative and municipal elections in which the FMLN took part for the first time ever as a political party.

1992. Government representatives and guerrilla leaders sign an agreement to put an end to the civil war. The FMLN turns into a political party and is legalized as a political organization.

1991. ARENA comes out a winner from the Municipal and legislative elections held on March 10. The peace agreements are signed in Mexico

The FMLN and the government meet in Switzerland to sign the Geneva Accords
