Biografía:
São Luis do Maranhão, 1868 His literary creation is considered the forerunner of Brazilian modernism. His participation as a writer in the Week 22 Movement was polemic. His works were focused on religious and political topics. He was a founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Arts and Literature, though he broke free from that institution in 1924 due to political reasons. His great works are "Canaà", "Malazarte", "Meu Próprio Romance" and "A viagem moravilhosa".
