Rio de Janeiro, 1942 In his own turf he's known under the nickname of O anjo preto do Brasil ("Brazil's Black Angel"). He spent his youth in Tres Pontas where he showed his stuff as a musician and started performing in ballrooms and concert halls. He soon moved to Belo Horizonte. He made a name of himself during the Second International Song Festival with a blockbuster entitled "Travessia". Gil is an artist highly recognized in his homeland and abroad, especially in the United States.
