Tourism is the world's most important source of income

Tourism stood out as a source of global revenue in 2018 by reporting an increase of 3.9%, according to the annual report of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

It adds that for 8 consecutive years, that contribution means a growth higher than the average of world GDP (3.2% the previous year).

The smoke-free industry in that year favored the global economy with $8.8 trillion and accounted for 10.4% of economic activity as a whole.

Gloria Guevara, president and CEO of the WTTC, meant that "2018 was another year of strong growth in the travel and tourism sector, reinforcing its role as an engine of economic growth and employment.

The WTTC recognized that 319 million people globally are employed in the tourism sector, which represents one in ten jobs on the planet and is responsible for one out of every five new jobs created in the world in the last five years.
