The tourist destinations of the Americas and the Caribbean islands are ideal for an enchanting vacation, but not only for sun, beach, water sports, architecture, archeology or hiking distinguish them. Also, it is worth mentioning the women born in these regions who have transcended through their history in diverse spheres such as tourism.

On this March, 8th International Women's Day, our editorial staff would like to pay tribute to them and to remember Silvia Zorzanello; who together with Marta Rossi created the company Marta Rossi & Silvia Zorzanello Feiras e Emprendimentos, and successfully took on the Gramado Tourism Festival, which has established itself as the main platform for tourism business in South America, and it maintains its focus on tourism market trends.

When it comes to women in managerial positions, it is worth mentioning Carolina Briones, Secretary General of the Central American Tourism Promotion Agency (CATA), a woman who radiates her greatness in the management of a promotion agency and who has been promoting the development of innovation projects and technological tools to achieve greater market access through them.

To the list of talented women in the field of tourism is added Adriana Reyes, born in Uruguay but based in Mexico, who after working for several years in the hotel and aviation industries, she founded the Punta del Este tour operator, with an excellent management of its programs to South America, Central America and the Caribbean, which has expanded around the world.

And as for those who are at the head of the tourism portfolio, it is worth mentioning Josephine Connolly of the Turks and Caicos Islands, who was recently elected and who said that tourism is the main economic engine of that country and she is committed to work to ensure the industry not only recovers, but also surpasses its current record as one of the world's top luxury destinations.

Adding to the list of headliners in the businessless industry in Ecuador Rosi Prado de Holguín, a woman who is also an architect, linguist, with a long career in the world of tourism and former sales manager for American Airlines.

Likewise in Peru, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), is a woman, Claudia Cornejo Mohme, who previously served as Vice Minister of Tourism between 2011 and 2013 and it assumed that responsibility in 2020.

Women can find a voice and independence in tourism activities, by being part of the decision-making processes and by gaining new roles in their families, homes and within local power structures.

Of course, there are still male chauvinist conceptions that try to curb the incorporation of women into management positions, even though a high percentage of women are employed in accommodation, travel agencies/tour operators and air transport.

The promotion of gender equality, women's empowerment and the elimination of gender disparities in education is the third United Nations Millennium Development to which UNWTO is committed.
