Panama increases number of visitors in 2018

The arrival of a greater number of cruise ships contributed to the fact that Panama increased the number of visitors in 2018, when it registered 5.4% growth compared to the previous year.

According to statistics released by the National Immigration Service and the Panama Maritime Authority, tourists had a slight increase of 0.8 percent.

However, the number of trips by Panamanians and foreign residents living in the country was not very significant, falling by 17.9 percent and 31.7 percent, respectively, until October.

Regarding cruise ships, it is estimated that in the 2018-2019 high season, which began last October 5, only 234 vessels of this type pass through the Panama Canal.

Albano Aguilar, a leading specialist in international trade of the inter-oceanic route, considered that in 2019 they expect to welcome more than 237,000 passengers through the Canal, since this is the second season of cruises through the expanded locks.
