Quebrângulo, 1892 He was the first of fifteen brothers to be born. His childhood went by various sites of the state of Pernambuco. In 1914 he decided to move to Rio de Janeiro, with only his first studies and the self-taught writings of some of the literary works as his intellectual equipment, cause he never registered at the University. Still, he began to earn his living as a writing instructor in the newspapers “O Correio da Manhã” and “A Tarde”. Nevertheless, the bubonic plague devastated the desert region of Pameira dos Indios, the last family stronghold, where three of his brother died. That's why he return there to help his homeland. His uneasiness made him practice journalism and politics, activities in which hi distinguished himself like in literature. In 1925, he began to write novels and the first of them was born: “Caetés”. From 1930 to 1936 he lived in Maceió where he led the printing house and the Instruction of the State, in this era began his friendship with the group of writers from the northern part of the country: José Lins do Rego, Raquel de Queiroz, Jorge Amado and Waldemar Cavalcanti. He published “São Bernardo” (1934) and “Angustia” (1936) before being arrested because of political causes not well determined. In “Memórias do Cárcere” he left evidence of the year in prison to which he was subdued. After the sad episode, he continued with the literary works and in fact he became one of the best Brazilian writers. In 1945, he decided to enter the Communist Party. In 1951, before traveling to the Soviet Union, he was elected chairman of the Brazilian Association of Writers. He died a few days after his return to Rio de Janeiro in 1953. His work where a deep knowledge of misery and the endemic evils is reflected has been translated into different languages and there has been cinematography version of some of them.
