Biografía:
1729-1789 Mariana, 1729 Claudio Manuel da Costa lived for quite some time in Portugal, where he attended law school. He also served in the public office between 1762 and 1765. Glauceste Saturnino is the preaching penname of Claudio Manuel de Costa, the premiere poet of the Brazilian neoclassical style. From this esthetic standpoint, he humbly cultivated bucolic and pastoral poetry with an exaltation of nature and riddled with platonic love. The setting of Minas seems to be the constant backdrop for his verses of inner annoyance in which Minas' rustic lifestyle is pitted against the European cultural experience. His sonnets stand out for their formal and linguistic perfection, yet his ten-stanza verses deal with the contemplation of life. His most outstanding works include Poetic Works (1768, lyrical) and "Vila Rica", published after his death in 1839 (epic).
