Santiago de los Caballeros, 1901 At the beginning of his career, he got some training from maestro Juan B. Gomez, but eventually he chose his own painting course without any academic influence whatsoever. His first exposition was held in 1932 in Santo Domingo at a time when he was labeled as a traditional painter. From the impressionist school, Yoryi Morel broached Dominican topics with such mastery that puts him high on the list of the forerunners of Dominican painting. In 1952, he won the first prize of the Sixth Dominican Biennial. Morel was undoubtedly the Dominican painter who best used light shades and hues in Dominican painting, let alone being a master of his time's social landscape.
