1492Columbus discovered the island and named it Hispaniola, Latin form for La Española. After several clashes with natives –one of them was Cazique Enriquillo, who rebelled against the conquest and caused quite some sorrow and grief among the Spanish conquistadors- the Spaniards eventually sets in and Columbus founds La Isabela, right at the Isabela River delta near Puerto Plata.
