The Stone Arches were originally built in 1750 to serve as an aqueduct to supply Rio’s downtown area with water coming down from Santa Teresa.Located in Largo de la Lapa Plaza –formerly the heart of Rio’s nightlife in the late 19th century, the Carioca Arches do have a place in colonial history. Today, the arches have another attraction of its own: the tramway that links the downtown Carioca Station with the picture-perfect Santa Teresa district, known by locals as the “Santa Teresa Tram.” Along the entire ride, an interesting cluster of eclectic houses line up down the line.
