Victor Schoelcher, a Parisian whose campaign to abolish slavery in France's colonies succeeded in 1848, was elected deputy governor of Guadeloupe.
The Old Ursuline Convent, designed in 1745 and completed in 1750 is located on the site of the earlier convent. It is believed to be the oldest building in the French Quarter and is definitely the only one built during French domination. It is also believed to be the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley.
