Saint Kitts & Nevis

Origin

Christopher Columbus landed on St. Kitts & Nevis in 1493, thus naming the island after its holy patron saint: St. Christopher. The islands were colonized by the British in 1623 and 1628 respectively. In the 17th and 18th Centuries, the French conquered St. Kitts several times, but it was eventually handed over to Great Britain under the 1783 Paris Treaty.

Executive power: British monarch (Head of State represented by the Governor-general). Cabinet (representative before the National Assembly).Legislative power: an 11-member National Assembly elected for five-year terms, plus four non-elective nominee members. Head of State: Elizabeth II and Clement A. ArrindelHead of government: Denzil Douglas.


General History

These are small islands united by a two- mile- long channel that were discovered by Columbus in 1493. They were known as " Liamuiga" by the Carib aborigines.
