Origin

The first events of the Haitian history in particular (to distinguish it from the history of la Espanola island in general) is directly linked with Toussaint Louverture who helped to free the slaves in 1794.he led the French troops when forced the British out in 1798 and towards 1801 he governed the entire island. Toussaint resisted the French efforts to re establish slavery. He was captured by the French troops in 1802 and died while in prison a year later. In 1804, general Jean Jacques Dessalines declared la Espanola island independent from the French colonial command. The island was then called Haiti and Dessalines took the title of Emperor. In 1806 he was assassinated and some years later the North part of Haiti was dominated by Henri Christopher while Alexander Sabès Pétion established a Republic in the South After the death Christophe in 1820, Jean Pierre Boyer, Pétion successor consolidated his power in the whole island. In 1844 the eastern zone declared its independence as the Santo Domingo Republic, today Dominican republic.After that the history is characterized by a series of intestine wars for political rise between Negroes and mulattos. In 1849, Faustin Élie Soulouque proclaimed himself as emperor Faustino I and governed in a despotic way during 10 years. At the beginning of 1859, the mulatto Nicholas Fabre Geffrard restored the republican government and remained in power until 1867..

Government

After the defeat of François Duvalier’s government in 1986, a new Constitution was passed in March 1987 by a people’s referendum, but it was suspended in 1988 after military coup de tat.The first Haitian president democratically elected was priest Jean Bertrand Aristide in February 1991 who was expelled by another military coup de tat in September 1991 and returned in 1994 with the support of the international community. Executive power:according to the constitution of 1987, a president directly elected for a period of 5 years exerts the executive power. The president elects the Prime Minister who represents in Parliament the party of the main coalition. Legislative power:The constitution of 1987 recognizes a bicameral Parliament made by a Senate with 27 members and a Depute Chamber with 77 steps. The legislative has to rectify the president’s t election of a government judicial power:The judicial power is made of a cassation jury and other lesser appealing juries, civilian and peace judges. The President appoints the judges and has the right to commute punishments. Local government;The nine Haitian departments are headed by the prefects appointed b the central government.
