The Bahamas

Origin

In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on the Bahamas, exactly on a island then inhabited by Arawak Indians. The Bahamas Archipelago was one of the fewest Caribbean regions where Arawak Indians were never evicted by the Caribs. Those Americans were probably the very first to “discover” the lost European sailors on October 12, 1492.

Government

Queen Elizabeth II of England is the Head of State, represented by governor-general: Sir Orville Turquest (since February 1995). Legislative power: Governor-general, a 16-member Senate recommended by the Prime Minister (four by the leader of the opposition party and three by the Governor-general after previous talks with the Prime Minister. Finally, there’s also a 49-member Assembly that serves for a five-year term, yet in can be dissolved anytime.Political parties: Free National Movement, the ruling party under the leadership of Hubert Ingraham. Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) founded in 1953 to cluster the African-origin population around the independent cause. The Vanguard Party, Socialist-oriented and without legislative representatives. The People’s Democratic Force led by Fred Mitchell.

Bahamas is one of the world's main tourist destinations, composed by about 700 islands and 2 400 keys.
