Chance’s Peak Volcano erupts
1995

1995The government declares a state of emergency when the threat of eruption by Chance’s Peak Volcano is looming larger. 6,000 people are evacuated to the south of the island, including the capital’s entire population. Eruptions of several volcanoes went on in recent years; one of them completely wracked the airport on Olveston Island. Southern Montserrat was still uninhabited by 1999.

Joint embassy in Brussels

1992 St. Kitts, Antigua, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada and Monserrat agree on opening a joint embassy in Brussels to the European Economic Community.

Autonomy for Montserrat
1871

1871-1956 between 1871 and 1956, the territory joined the Leeward Islands Federation. It achieved its independence after the aforesaid federation was dissolved, and from 1958 to 1962 it belonged to the Caribbean Federation.In 1967, the colonial status was still in place on the island nation and did not join the Caribbean Associated States.

Discovery and colonization of Montserrat
1493

1493This is a completely volcanic-origin island. Christopher Columbus, who named it after a well-known monastery he’d seen in the same-name Spanish location, discovered Montserrat in 1493. In 1632, British and Irish colonization begins, making a significant dent in its original population. Therefore, settlers are bound to bring in African slaves to work in sugar cane plantations. Between 1664 and 1668, France grips Montserrat after a longstanding bickering with the British. In 1783, the Versailles Treaty locks the island on as a British domain.
