Belize’s name

1979This is the Caribbean’s only port and most important trade center. Its name was given by Peter Wallace, a Scottish buccaneer who settle down on that territory in the Mid 17th Century. It was known as British Honduras until 1979.

Discovery and colonization of Belize

1502The first-ever European settlers come to Belize. In 1638, the British colonization begins at a time when pirates and Spanish vessels were constantly attacking the country to get a hold on it. In 1798, The British defeat the Spaniards and strengthen London’s colonial rule

The 1859 Treaty

1821The Guatemalan frontiers were established by the 1859 Treaty. In 1940, Guatemala attacks the Treaty.

Belize becomes a British colony

1862 Belize is recognized as a British colony, but the debate on this matter goes on into the 20th century.

The People’s Union Party

1954The People’s Union Party, led by George Price, wins the elections.

U.S. troops dispatched to Belize

1975-1977The U.S. sent troops to Belize to protect it from a Guatemalan invasion.

Belize: Sovereign State linked to the British Commonwealth

1981Belize wins its independence and becomes a Sovereign State associated to the British Commonwealth. Its first-ever constitution, currently in place, is enacted.

Belize’s sovereignty

1988 On May 19, 1988, representatives from Belize, Guatemala and the United Kingdom announce the creation of a joint committee to find a solution to the matter of Belize’s territorial sovereignty.

Diplomatic relations with some countries

1989Belize establishes diplomatic relations with Spain and Taiwan. China retaliates by breaking relations with Belize.
