HAVANA 500: Chinatown Revival

The planned revival of Chinatown, a place of high cultural significance in the Cuban capital, is among the tasks proposed to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Havana's Villa de San Cristobal in November 2019.

Government authorities have insisted that the half millennium of the city must be an incentive to take the city to a certain level, with the guarantee of quality and durability in the actions.

The Chinatown buildings, most of them with high patrimonial, urban and environmental value, present a deterioration to which one must dedicate careful attention, especially the housing fund.

With the purpose of counteracting this reality, multi-sectorial projects have been designed aimed at the recovery of the area, also taking into account the commercial, recreational and tourist impact it generates.

The plan includes actions aimed at rescuing the ancient Chinese traditions, among which are included the exquisite culinary art, ceramics and the typical decoration of its facilities, theaters and others.

Relevant facilities within the neighbourhood will also be renovated, such as the Chinese newspaper Kwong-Wah-Po, dry cleaners and pharmacies with their traditional medicine.

At the same time, public lighting, parks and streets will be revived; roads will be paved and sidewalks will be restored in order to recover the general image of Chinatown, recreating the atmosphere with elements referring to the identity and culture of the Asian nation.
