Guatemala closed 2018 with a significant rise in the tourism sector and this year aims to continue consolidating as a destination in Latin America, say official sources today.
The director of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (Inguat) Jorge Mario Chajon confirmed that until December the number of foreign visitors to the country increased by 280,999 compared to 2017, equivalent to a 13 percent increase.
In an interview published by the Guatemalan News Agency, Chajon attributed this improvement to the implementation of various international advertising campaigns that prioritized the markets of the United States, Canada, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom and Spain.
Due to the growing demand, this year the country has 24 new air connections, 17 from the United States and seven from Europe.
In 2018 we also recovered the Salvadoran public, our main generator of tourism, and we worked hand in hand with the private sector,' he said.
By 2019, the development and promotion of the travel industry are a priority element in the government's general policy, assured Chajon.
This year we will give continuity to what was stated in the National Agreement for the Competitive and Sustainable Development of Tourism in Guatemala 2018-2032, which seeks to promote the continuity of actions that contribute to strengthen the industry at the national level,' he added.
