It is an archipelago with more than 40 islands located around 100 kilometers East of Puerto Rico. Most of them are volcanic and mountainous, except Anegada, which is of coral origin. Tórtola, the biggest island of the group, has an area of approximately 62 km2 and a population of 9 257 inhabitants (1999). Generally, these are mountainous islands, except Anegada, which is flat, and they have a total area of 153 km2. It has a subtropical climate, moderated by the east winds.
Around 40 islands and keys form the British Virgin Islands Colony. Of the 16 inhabited islands, the main ones are Tórtola, Virgen Gorda, Anegada, Jost Vand Dyke, Peter Island and Salt Island.
It has tropical flora, with giant tree woods and cactus, mountain guavas, mahogany and white cedar trees are the most representative of the Islands’ vegetation.
A variety of sea species can be observed in the coral sea bottom at Anegada Island. On the other hand, many birds fly all over the Islands, like sparrows and pigeons.
