Education is compulsory for children between 6 and 14 years old. In 1989, there was one kid in elementary school for every 25 students. In the early 1990s, more than 48,600 students were in elementary schools, while 10,600 were in junior high school.The country’s three major religious groups -Catholics, Anglicans and Methodists- control schools in Belize.The University of Belize keeps close ties with the University of Michiga in the U.S.Higher education is taught in the country’s two colleges in Belize City and Corozal.Illiteracy rate is over 90%, one of the highest in all Latin America.
