Agriculture comprises nearly 85 percent of the land and its major crops are rice, bananas, coconuts, livestock, fowl birds and other products.

Exports hinge on four fundamental activities: tourism, international banking services, foreign trade and industry.

Transport

In Surinam, there are some 2,320 kilometers of paved roads and over 87 kilometers of railroads, the country's number-one means of transportation. there are more that 1,500 kilometers of watercourses suitable for navigation and a grand total of 46 airports scattered all across the country.

It joined Caricom on July 4, 1995. It’s also a full member of ACS and OAS since 1977.
