Industry

Road Town (6 330 inhabitants in 1999) is the capital and only city of the group; it is located in the Southeastern coast of Tortola and it is an important port. The annual energy consumption per capita is equivalent to the amount produced from 1 647 kg of imported carbon (1988).

Main Branches

The main products are: fish, fruits, cattle and vegetables. The main economic activities are tourism and fishing. Tourism represents 45% of the national income; We should point out that tourist activities are a menace to the coral reefs. Fishing is the traditional economic activity. As taxes have been abolished, the Islands have become an ideal place for banking activities. Sand and gravel are very important exports. The mining potential is being studied due to the possible existence of copper deposits. .


Transport

Many airlines ensure international flights and communication among the Islands. Sea transportation is very thorough and includes different schedules and types of vessels. The most recommended means of transportation to travel from one place to another or for excursions are taxis; very inexpensive bus services are also available.
