Chapter Acts of Havana Recognized by UNESCO

The Chapter Acts of Havana, which include 273 original books, the oldest and most unique ones preserved in the Historical Archive of the Historian Office, were recognized by UNESCO.

This valuable documentation, which gathers four centuries of history, had been inscribed in the World Programme National Registry of the Memory, and now UNESCO recognizes, at the regional level, its heritage value, not only for local history but to understand the exchange between Spain and Cuba, but also the world’s relations with the island.

Eusebio Leal Spengler, Historian of Havana City, said that "you cannot write the history of Cuba, nor Las Antillas, nor the good part of the American continent, without these records".

Guilherme Canela, Executive Secretary of the Regional Committee of the Memory of the World Program, highlighted the three pillars of the program which are heritage preservation, access to documents and socialization.

Recognized the relevance of the delivery as extremely historical documents and in the context of the 500 years of the foundation of the current Cuban capital

The documents contained in the Chapter Acts of Havana are integrated into two groups: the original books (1550-1898) and the transcribed ones (1550-1809).

At the meeting were present Katherine Müller-Marín, Director of the Regional Office of Culture for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the UNESCO representation in the Republic of Cuba, Anayansi Rodríguez, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Oscar León, President of the Cuban Commission of UNESCO, and Dr. Nuria Gregory, Chairperson of the National Committee of the Memory of the World Programme.
