Antonio de Castro Alves is penciled in as one of the most outstanding Brazilian literary figures of his time, even considered the highest writer of Brazilian romanticism. He attended law school in Recife and soon got a career as a poet and liberal orator who advocated very strongly against the slavery system of the Brazilian Empire. Castro Alves renewed the Brazilian poetic scene and stood aloof from any sense of guilt and personal feelings, especially when dealing with eroticism , but without ever walking away from the strictest romantic canons. This author is considered the forerunner of symbolism in Brazil and his pen never hesitated when it came to fighting for freedom and justice for the Brazilian territory. "Espumas fluctuantes" (1870) is the only work that saw the light of day during the author's fleeting passage through this world. After his death, his works "A cochoeira de Paulo Afonso", "Os escravos" and "Últimas estrofas" were put out. In 1966, Jose Aguilar published an interesting volume of lyrical works entitled "Poesías completas". Antonio de Castro Alves passed away in Bahia in 1871.
