The Cabaret Tropicana, in the Cuban capital, receives annually thousands of visitors who enjoy the artistic spectacle, in which the donaire of its dancers and the portentous Cuban music stand out, together with the attractive atmosphere that the architectural ensemble gives it, Nestled in an area where the palm trees stand out, with their unique seal of Cubany.

So much fame is based on its cultural values that the Excellencies Group distinguished it at the presentation of its Excellencies Tourist Awards 2018, for being a true legend in the history of musical shows and dancers worldwide and a bastion of national culture.

There is no doubt that it is an attraction that must be visited by tourists to Havana, as it gives them the opportunity to know one of the largest and most famous night centers in Cuba and also in the world, with a glamour and elegance consolidated in its already 81 years of existence.

It emerged as a kind of night club, inaugurated on December 31, 1939, under the name of Beau Site, although 12 months later it was baptized as Tropicana, alluding to a piece of music. With an endorsement that places it among the best of its kind in the eight decades since its opening, Tropicana has become a complex of facilities that offers the option of knowing the best of Cuban music and tasting delicious cocktails and dishes of inimitable flavor.

It has the Hall Under the Stars, place of dreams where the vegetation is part of an always gigantic musical show and in which the spectators enjoy Afro-Cuban dances, national and international voices of incomparable quality, as well as Cuban cigars and rum.

There, up to 200 dancers appear on stage, dressed with unique ornaments to dance with the purest and genuine Caribbean flavor. To that place are added the restaurant The Gardens and the bohemian Cafe Rodney, whose name pays homage to Roderico Neyra, simply known as Rodney El Mago, who once directed the artistic show in a very peculiar way, which influenced the splendor and fame of the facility.

Tropicana also has the living room "Arcos de Cristal", where you can dance with live orchestras and a delicious Cuban cuisine and cocktail bar. This emblematic cabaret featured renowned artists such as Nat King Cole, Josephine Baker, Xavier Cugat, Los Chavales de España, Carmen Miranda, Pedro Vargas, Libertad Lamarque, Tania Libertad, Alejandra Guzmán, Cheo Feliciano, Celia Cruz, Olga Guillot, Rita Montaner and Snowball, among others. Characterized by the beauty of its facilities, the virtuosity of its dancers, the magnificence of its shows and many other attributes, the cabaret Tropicana received the status of National Monument in the year 2002, according to Decree 178 of the National Council of Monuments of Cuba.

Recounting how this installation came about, that is to say that when the world was suffering the economic recession of the 1930s, an Italian businessman named Victor Correa, very experienced in show business, conceived the idea of transforming the hacienda Villa Mina, in the then sub-urban neighborhood of Marianao into a center of artistic and musical recreation.

He wanted the leafy grove, where the royal palm, the national tree of Cuba, stood out, to remain one of its attractions, and he wanted an open-air stage to be projected, given the benefits of the island’s climate. The cabaret was like an unusual tropical version of the Parisian Folies Bergere, inserted into the tropical paradise of a Havana hacienda. In the late 1940s it passed into the hands of Martin Fox, known as one of the Tsars of Gambling.

He arranged the remodeling and expansion of the premises, without changing the conception of the stage under the trees. Only other elements were added. On December 31, 1949, the already famous installation was installed at its entrance a sculpture called Ballerina, made by the prestigious Cuban plastic artist Rita Longa.

The architect Max Borges (son) -in charge of the remodelling works of the installation- thought of the aforementioned sculptor to create a figure with which to decorate the pond at the entrance. Paradoxical as it may seem, Longa preferred to conceive of a graceful classical dance dancer.

Since then she has served as a hostess, as if to express that the spirit of dance has no boundaries. In addition to this sculptural ensemble, another work also confers cultural values on Tropicana.

This is The "Fountain of the Nymphs" by the artist Aldo Gamba. The Tropicana cabaret is, today, one of the largest and most famous nightclubs in Cuba and also in the world, which has multiplied both on the island and abroad. Under the same name and with similar shows this type of installation has emerged in the city of Matanzas, very close to the famous spa of Varadero, as well as in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba.

Also in the Canary Islands and Santiago de Chile there are night clubs, where Cuban artistic groups multiply the fame of a cabaret that ranks among the most attractive in the world.

Tropicana is preferred by businessmen and lovers of good tobacco, hence every year in its Havana enclave of the Marianao neighborhood, is one of the venues of the International Habano Festival.

Before the pandemic of the coronavirus, the delivery next January of the Awards corresponding to this 2020 will have two novelties: the celebration of the Excellencies Awards in a virtual way, and the insertion of a new category -Excellencies Tourist Award Mention Welfare, together with the traditional Excellences Tourist Awards, Excellences Gourmet Awards and Spirit of Excellence Award.
