The list of assets from the historical and artistic inventory is as large as the heritage itself. Many of them are urban cores like Ouro Preto and Salvador’s historical center. From that inventory, nine locations were declared Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO. They are: Olinda in Pernambuco; Salvador’ historic core in Bahia; Ouro Preto and Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Sanctuary in Congonhas do Campo, both in Minas Gerais; Missões (Missions) in Rio Grande do Sul; Sao Luis in Maranhão; Brasilia, the nation’s capital and the natural reserves in Serra da Capivara Nature Park in Piauí, and Iguaçú National Park in Parana. Two of the categories bestowed by UNESCO go beyond the national boundaries, for part of both Missions and the Iguazu National Park are located in Argentina and Paraguay.
