Matanzas

Barely 100 km far from the Cuban capital, Matanzas-founded in 1693- offers the visitors the image of a city settled at the margins of a harbor of quiet waters. Due to the rivers that crosses it and its rich cultural traditions, among which are the musical creations like danzon, danzonete and rumba, as well as the distinct Sauto Theater 135 years old, the city is also known as both the Venice and Athens of Cuba. Matanzas has Varadero Tourist Resort, the main bath place in the biggest of the Antilles and one of the best well known in the world. It has beautiful shallow beaches of transparent waters, where the bathers go in meter by meter without being completely covered by the water, while others play in the white fine sand. To the South of the province there is the National Park Peninsula de Zapata, the most important reserve of Cuban flora and fauna. Its Laguna del Tesoro, the huge crocodile breeding place of La Boca, the vertical flooded coastal caves, known as basins as well as Playa Larga and Playa Giron promise a rich journey in full contact with the varied nature of the place which is considered the biggest refugee of birds in the island an which is the biggest marsh in the Insular Caribbean. Among the places of interest we recommend the Bacunayagua Bridge, which offers an impressive view of the Yumuri Valley and stands as an obliged stop over. The Bellamar Caves discovered in the 19 th century, the museum "Oscar Maria de Rojas, the Pharmaceutical Museum and Cardenas, city of carriages and horses, which was the first to fly the National Flag.
