Colombia

Among the most outstanding Colombian writers of the 19 Century is the novelist Jorge Isaac. Another famous writer is José Asunción Silva (1865-1896). In his short but valuable life he went through romanticism to modernism. In the 20 Century the poet and novelist Álvaro Mutis, is also an outstanding writer. He won Prince of Asturias Prize for Art in 1997 and finally, the most important writer of the country, Gabriel García Márquez who was the Nobel prizewinner for Literature in 1982. In his novels and short-stories realism and fantasy weave together (to create what is known as magic realism). His first novels reflect the atmosphere of violence and intolerance that the country lived when he wrote these novels. In these novels you may feel an stylistic evolution that goes through the Baroque prose up to laconic and naked phrases. His novel “Cien años de soledad” (One Hundred Years of Solitude) is known all over the world.
