Pope John Paul II visits Cuba. Under an invitation extended by President Fidel Castro, His Holiness travels to four provinces, delivering four Masses and performing other activities.

1997Commander Ernesto Guevara’s remains, and those of some of his comrades fallen in Bolivia in 1967, arrived in Cuba. 30 years later, in the midst of a heartfelt homage, they are buried in Santa Clara, a city where Che Guevara chalked up a brilliant victory during Cuba’s liberation war.

1997The 14th World Youth and Students Festival takes place in Cuba with an attendance way over 11,000 delegates from different countries plus 1,000 from all over Cuba. Visitors shared the down-to-earth hospitality of Cuban homes. However, hundreds of thousands of Cuban youngsters took part in the Festival.

1997General elections are held. Members of Parliament are elected by secret and direct ballot.

1997The Fifth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba is held in Havana, featuring an all-out analysis of the country’s political, economic and social situation in the past years –the hardest for the Revolution. The new course for the upcoming years was outlined on a pledge for Cuba to resume and strengthen its development projects.
