Under this treaty, Spain surrenders the island to the French settlers who definitely established on that territory in 1795.

Developments during the conquest of the Dominican Republic

1586-1809. In 1586, English pirate Francis Drake ransacked its capital and in 1697 the French seized, in virtue of the Ryswick Treaty, the western half of the island (Haiti), only to spread their occupation all over the territory. The island was partially regained by Spain in 1809, when the world’s first-ever black republic had already set in.

1492Columbus discovered the island and named it Hispaniola, Latin form for La Española. After several clashes with natives –one of them was Cazique Enriquillo, who rebelled against the conquest and caused quite some sorrow and grief among the Spanish conquistadors- the Spaniards eventually sets in and Columbus founds La Isabela, right at the Isabela River delta near Puerto Plata.

1400Before the discovery, the territory was called Quisqueya, meaning Mother of all Lands. There were four well-limited groups of original inhabitants: Tainos, Ciguayos, Lucayos and Caribe people. The first settlers were fishermen and sailors.
