Name of the Bermudas

1800Also known as Mainland or Sommers Islands because of a British shipwrecked survivor who got there in the 17th Century. Due to its strategic importance, there are some naval bases in this territory.

Discovery and colonization of the Bermudas

1502The Bermudas were discovered by Spanish Juan Bermudez, who named them after himself. In 1615, the islands were managed by the Sommers Islands Company, and in 1684 they are turned into a British colony.

First elections in Bermudas

1968 The very first elections are held in the middle of racial tensions and under the rule of a new constitution that granted a British self-government.

Racial conflicts in Bermudas

1977-1978Authorities launch a violent crackdown on racial conflicts. The following year, a British blue-ribbon panel hints independence for the territory and electoral reforms to widen representation for the black-majority Progressive Labor Party. This proposal was turned down.
