Guyana

General Geography

Guyana can be divided into three geographical regions. There is a belt of alluvial grounds which varies in width between 8 and 65 Km. At South, there is a dense jungle area which is almost an 80% of its surface. The forests are extended toward a high region in the inner part of the country. It has a tropical-ecuatorial weather, with few changes of temperature. Annual precipitations in the coast take place from April to August and from November to January.


Geographical Extension

It has a surface of 214.969 km2. There are mainly wavy high lands, low coast plains and grassland at South. During rainy seasons, floodings are usual.


Geographical Division

It´s divided into ten regions. Their names are Barima-Waini , Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Demerara-Mahaica, East Berbice-Corentyne, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, Mahaica-Berbice, Pomeroon-Supenaam, Potaro-Siparuni, Upper Demerara-Berbice and Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo.


Frontiers

It´s located at Northest of South America, bounding with Surinam by Est, with Brasil by South, with Venezuela by West and the Caribbean Sea by North


Coast

It has coasts only to the Caribbean sea reaching a width of 435 Km. Almost all Guyana’s rivers flow its coasts and there is where the main cities of the country are based, so the most of its population lives there.


Rivers

There are several rivers in Guyana highlighting the rivers Cuyuní, Mazaruni, Essequibo (it covers 371 miles, one of the most extended "routes of water". Ireng river, represents the border between Guyana and Brasil, Demerara river is the main access route to Georgentown, the capital. Some rivers have gorgeous waterfalls, just as Kaieteur with 226 m height, Potaro river, one of the highest of the world. The rivers are navigable about 100 to 160 km into the country because it´s impossible to do it in the inner due to the water jumps and fasts.


Lakes

There are few lakes in the country, just as lakes Capoey , Tapacumo, Ikuraka, Iteribisci and the better known of all: Lake Mainstay or as it´s also named Lake Cool and Hot, due to the variety of its waters temperature. It´s located in the coast of Essequibo river with sandy beaches.


National Flora

Plants and trees are pretty well known due to their great size; gigant water lily is quite commun. The dense jungle allowes the development of the woods industry.


National Animal

You´ll be able to enjoy a huge variety of multicolored birds, different "singing" monkeys, the croak of golden frogs can be heard, you can also find gigant aligators, snakes and wild tigers.
