Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

General Geography

The country has a total area of 388 Km2 of which the San Vincent Island constitutes 345 km2 and the northern area of the Grenadines Islands constitute 43 km2, and Bequia, Baliceau, Canouan, Mustique, Mayreau, Quatre, Savan and Union are the most important islands. It has an ondulating relief and fertile soils. Besides the main island, the country comprises the northern portion of the mountain chain of the Grenadines, which extends between Saint Vincent and Grenada. The main islands of this group are Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and Union. The islands that make up Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are volcanic in origin and have forested mountains.Saint Vincent shares a lot of its geo-physical characteristicswith that of the Grenadines islands, especially its beaches of white sands and its coral reefs.The country has a tropical climate with an average annual temperature of about 24 degrees centigrade (76° F). The island's average annual rainfall ranges from about 1500 mm (about 60 in) on the coast to about 3800 mm (about 150 in) in the interior mountains.A mountainous range is located across the island of St. Vincent, covered by the vegetation that raises to a maximum at the Soufrière volcano (1.234 m), an active volcano located in the northern part of the island that suddenly erupted in 1821, 1902 and 1979.

Geographical Division

The largest Grenadines are Bequia, Canouan, Mustique, Mayreau and Union.The capital and main port is Kingstown (15.670 inhabitants), located on the southwestern coast of Saint Vincent..Kingstown is a port city, the main commercial center and capital of the small insular state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, which lies southeast of the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the so-called Windward Islands, in the Lesser Antilles.

It has 84 kilometers of coasts.


Rivers

In the mountains of Saint Vincent some small streams and strong currents arises from them as the Colonarie.


National Flora

The islands have and an exuberant tropical flora. The most original and typical tree is the Mangostino. In the botanical gardens the Spachea perforata, can be seen. This is an indigenous tree from Saint Vincent. The Sucker constitutes the third generation of the so-called "bread tree" brought from Tahiti.


National Animal

The fauna has the parrot, known as the Amazona guildinguii, as the typical specie but they should be protected because are in danger of became extinct. This animal is the national symbol. There are other protected species as the parrot of Saint Vincent, the ‘Bimini’ boa, the whistling “curruca”, the swallow of Bahamas and the golden oriole.The marine fauna offers a great variety of species that are not very common: barracuda, Shad, kingsfisher, merlin, tuna, bonito and sail fish. The protected species are Monk of the Caribbean seal, spiny lobster and spotted lobster and the queen conch.
