Guyana

Agriculture

Main crops and produces are sugarcane, rice, wheat, vegetable oil, livestock, swine, fowl birds, diary products, fishing and woodlands.


Exportations

The country is a top producer and exporter of sugar. Other major exports are diamonds and assembly-line equipment and refrigerators. The sugar industry controls all operations in this market and guarantees quotas to the European Union and the US, with $133 million worth of shippable products. Gold –second only to sugar- is another major export, controlled by the Omai Minen Co. that’s made up of two Canadian firms (Cambior with 70 percent of all stakes, and Golden Star holding a quarter of shares). The Guyanese government controls 5 percent of the stocks. The total value of exports is in the neighborhood of $100 million annually.

Importations

Imports hinge on oil byproducts, machinery, foodstuffs, cigars, cotton fabrics and footwear.


Industry

Plants of bauxite, sugar, rice, wood, fishing, fabrics, gold and other items can be found in the country. The industry, however, is quite limited to producing bauxite, foodstuffs and beverages.

Fishing

Fishing activities are clustered along the shores. Catches average 41,600 tons and quisquillas are by far the most precious capture.


Main Branches

The local economy’s top sectors are agriculture and mining, plus sugar, rice, bauxite and gold, comprising three quarters of the island nation’s total exports. Logging based on huge deep jungles of tall trees is also being developed.


Transport

Guyana has 8,890 kilometers of roads, a majority of them along the coasts. The country has 11 kilometers of railroads. The main seaports are Georgetown and New Amsterdam. Rivers provide a major means of communication.


Commercial Treaties

The country joined Caricom on July 4, 1973. The organization’s headquarters are in Georgetown, Guyana. It’s also a member state of the ACS, OAS and joined the UN in 1966. It’s a founding member of the Free Trade Agreement for the Americas.
