It is the capital of the French Guayana, in the island of Pepper. The city has a port and the boats can transport you certain distance. The main exports they carry out are wood, rum, essence of the rose and gold. In the city, it is located the Institute of Pasteur, specialized in the study of tropical diseases, and you can also find several buildings constructed in the colonial period, which gives the city a cultural and historical atmosphere. Its streets are designed like a chessboard. They go from the north to the south or from the west to the east, and the main highway extends all along the Nickerie River. The characteristics of the ground of the region are fundamental for the cultivation of rice and banana, the main economic sources of the country.
