Located in the middle of the island, it borders northward with Ciego de Ávila, to the northeast with the Atlantic Ocean, eastward with Las Tunas, and southward and west with the Caribbean Sea. Surface: 15.990 km2. Population: (1989) 732.056 inhabitants.
