Dominican Rep.

La Romana

La Romana is the second important city in the Dominican East. Located at 131 km east of Santo Domingo, it is the most luxurious city and probably the most internationally known, even though it is one of the youngest. Its origin goes back to the XVI Century, when Juan de Esquivel populated it. Nevertheless, its development starts at the beginning of this century, when the Puerto Rico Sugar Company was created, an important sugar cane mill that would cause the immigration of many people. This city is the most important urban area in the Eastern part of the country and one of the most important resorts of the Dominican Republic.
