Dominican Rep.

Santo Domingo

It is a charming city that combines the sophistication of the modern world with the charisma of the old world and the passion of Latin America. It was founded on August 4, 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus (Christopher Columbus’ brother), near the Ozama River and was named La Nueva Isabela. It is the current capital of the Dominican Republic, being one of the oldest cities of the American continent. From the beginning, it was relevant in the conquest of the continent and for many decades it was the starting point of the expeditions of the conquerors. Felipe II called it “Key of the Western Indies”.

Piracy, hurricanes and earthquakes have shaken the capital throughout time. The city witnessed the declaration of independence in 1844 at the Count’s door, which is located at the end of the street of the same name.

Santo Domingo is divided in two clearly distinct areas: the colonial area, which preserves an unmistakably Andalusian seal in some of its corners; and the modern area, where you can notice Trujillo’s tread in its obelisks and gigantic sculptures.
