Belmopan

The nation’s capital is right in the middle of Belmopan, just 80 kilometers from the Gulf of Honduras. The city –settled in well-protected hinterland- sits by the Belize River in a place where the former Mayan Empire was once in full bloom. Belmopan was picked as the nation’s new capital after Belize City was hit hard by a hurricane in 1961.
