Ruins of Copan

A municipality of Honduras attached to the Copan Department, featuring 31,546 inhabitants (year 2000). It’s just one kilometer away from the ruins of the former Mayan city of Copan, recently turned into an archeological park quite close to the Guatemalan border. Apart from those tourist attractions, the city depicts colorful adobe-tile houses, cobblestone streets, tree groves and other details.
The first news about the existence of the Copan Ruins was broken in 1576 to the King of Spain by Spanish conquistador Diego Garcia de Palacio. Later in the mid 19th century, U.S. explorer John L. Stephens got there and a fresh research into the findings began. However, not until the creation in 1975 of the Copan Project, spondored by the Honduran Institute of Archeology and History, research couldn’t be any deeper.
The Ruins of Copan make up a picture-perfect panorama of its green mountains and natural beauties that surround the region. Weather is mild thanks in part to the abundance of pinewood and exuberant vegetation.
