San Pedro Sula

San Pedro Sula is the main municipality of the Department of Cortes in the northwestern part of the country, just 60 meters above sea level. The total population is 444,570 inhabitants (year 2000).
Founded by Pedro Alvarado on June 27, 1536, under the name of San Pedro de Caballos. All along its history, the city has been through several disasters like fires, hurricanes and flooding, a reason why the town barely preserves its colonial past.
The city boasts the fastest industrial and commercial growth nationwide, thus nicknamed the industrial capital of Honduras and the country’s second-largest burg after Tegucigalpa. This development has put the traditional banana crop on the back burner economically speaking. As a matter of fact, a great deal of industrial parks have been set up around the area.
This is also one of the nation’s major communication hubs given its geographical location. The road linking Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula is one of Central America’s finest. The city’s airport, named Ramon Villeda, is equipped with a cutting-edge mesh that keeps that part of the country in touch with the rest of the world.
San pedro Sula celebrates its annual saint patrons party –San Pedro and San Pablo- on June 29.
