La Libertad

This Department, which has 1.652,88 km2, limits to the north, with the department of Chalatenango, to the east with the one of Southeastern San Salvador with La Paz and to the west with the departments of Sonsonate and Santa Ana in the south. It has an extensive coast, where there are important tourist centers and beaches such as El Obispo, Conchalío, the Zunzal, the Zonte, Mizata and San Diego. At this destinations visitors may enjoy of the numerous short rivers, which are born in the coastal mountain range. The coffee is cultivated at this place, also the sugar cane. The artisan production is very significant in Teotepeque (Basketwork), San Matías (Pottery), and the Freedom (marine adornments and weaves). Besides the main department, the New San Salvador, visitors may go to the localities of Jicalapa and San Jose Villanueva, where there are colonial churches, and also the Port of La Libertad, where there are many tourist facilities. It is worthy to mention the important archaeological places of Campana de San Andrés and Joya de Cerén.
