Isle of Youth

Also known as Treasure Island, Parrot Island and Isle of Pines, it received its present name in 1975 as an acknowledgment to the thousands of young people who studied and developed their creative work there. The territory composed of 672 cays and islets that make up the Archipelago of Los Canarreos, shows the visitor a rough coast of exuberant vegetation and a relief where the hillocks that keep an appreciate fortune in its marbles of the most diverse varieties are present. Land of the citrus and ceramic, in the blooming time of the plantations the scent of lemon blossom dominates the air as a sign of the coming harvest of the grapefruit and oranges, highly demanded by customers all throughout the world. Turned into a protected zone due to the natural and archaeological elements that holds, it has thick tropical forests where we can locate lizards of great size, hutia, rock dove, and wild pigs among other animal species preserved in their natural environment. On the Southwest edge of the island, there is an area of 4000 hectares which is the Marine National Park Punta Frances with one of the best-preserved eco systems in the country. On the underwater environment there is a coral reef of extraordinary beauty, virginity and diversity of species. with numerous tubular sponges and abundant caves good for the scuba diving activity carried out by El Colony Diving Center where day and night diving, underwater photography, and marina facilities are offered. Impressive indeed are the beaches, compact jungles full of stone, leafy palm trees and water springs with sulfur waters highly demanded by the visitors. The tradition lovers have the Museum El Abra Farm and the sadly known Presidio Modelo. Chinese, Japanese and American colonies are added to the attractions offered by the island.

The name Haiti comes from an Indian word meaning high ground - most of the country is mountainous.
