Saint Lucia

Castries

Castries is both the political and administrative capital of Santa Lucia, one of the Caribbean's most luring and quiet destinations where nature and its beauty are the name of the game. The Columbus Square is the hub of the old part of town that embraces such historical buildings as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a breathtaking instance of colonial-style architecture built in 1897. Its major tourist attractions are cloistered around the botanical station and gorgeous Vigie Beach. Atop the Fortune Mount, an ancient fortress overlooks the entire city. Here you'll find the chance of practicing all water sports in the main hotels and beaches. The seas surrounding the island offer a world full of adventure. Its restaurants serve the most delightful food from the local cuisine. Across from the Castries Port, the Pointe Seraphine shopping mall stands out with over 20 duty-free shops and stores. Shoppers are required to show their passports to the doormen before walking in the mall. Like any other good Caribbean area, Santa Lucia is bordered by marvelous beaches of white sands and teal-greenish waters. Near the Castries Port, La Toc Bay is another beach of gray sands.

Tips

The Turks & Caicos National Museum in Cockburn Town features what is thought to be the oldest shipwreck in the Americas, a caravel that sank on Molasses Reef in 1513.
