José María Heredia

Santiago de Cuba, 1803 Heredia has been named the “national poet” of Cuba. The young Heredia travelled with his parents through La Florida, Santo Domingo, Venezuela and Mexico. He graduate in Laws in Cuba and he based his lawyer’s office in Matanzas. But two years later, he was involved in the famous conspiracy Rayos y Soles de Bolivar against the Spanish colonial regimen. This situation forced him to travel to the United States in 1823. In 1825, he took up residence in Mexico where he occupied political positions and he worked as journalist and professor. He came back to Cuba only once, several years later, after a trip of four months. The theme of the most of his poetry is the lament for the yearned homeland. He died when he was thirty five years old in Toluca City, Mexico, on May, 7th 1839.
