Bagua or Pakua

Bagua or PakuaAccording to Feng Shui, it is necessary to study and understand the distribution of sectors in order to improve energy or chi in spaces where we live or work by applying certain rules or principles, before detailing objects, shapes and textures, which are to be kept as such, moved or modified. That’s the reason why Bagua map is used, also called Pakua, which is an energetic map that follows philosophical precepts included in the Book of Mutations of 1st Ching. Ba means eight and Gua, trigram, (three lines drawn on a sheet of paper representing a trigram). The word Pakua means «eight trigrams» and it is made up of an octagonal figure that contains them. This map’s symbology is used at Feng Shui schools, though its implementation way is different among those schools. In China, it’s also used as an amulet and placed in door and window frames so as to expel evil spirits and bad luck.

This map, which indicates the meaning of each area of the house as part of a simple diagram, helps to locate and find out which of them are to be organized and optimized by eliminating the accumulation of useless or counterproductive objects, something that brings about positive results as vibrations or positive energy currents can correctly flow everywhere.

The nine areas in which life takes place are shown in this map. It’s an octagonal pattern that is usually carved on wood, whose edge graphically contains the eight trigrams, and there’s a yin-yang symbol right in the center. The figure integrates yin-yang’s principle of five elements and eight trigrams with their colors and corresponding shapes.

In order facilitate the application of bagua map, some authors transform the octagonal pattern into a squared grill, which sometimes turns out to be easier to position in spaces, but there is no difference when using it because the square matches the content of the octagon. The shape is important if bagua is used as an object or abstraction, but it isn’t actually relevant when it comes to apply it to a flat surface, as its meaning isn’t sensitively altered.

Trigrams were originally considered a symbolic representation of a family, so each trigram was linked to an element from the family pattern: father, mother, older son, middle son, younger son, older daughter, middle daughter, younger daughter or different force or phenomena of nature, just like water, mountain, sky, lightning, land, lake, wind and fire. This trigram and its attributes were placed in the magic square, making up an energy map to be applied both to the physical world and human beings.
