More than 45,000 people visited the salt-works of Galerazamba, in Colombia, during Holy Week, which caused damage to the color of the so-called pink sea, which closed access to tourists to that place.
The tourist attraction of Galarezamba, a place located only 40 minutes from Cartagena, was used by visitors in order to refresh themselves and the excessive influx of people damaged the microalgae that confers the pink color.
This natural phenomenon does not remain throughout the year, because its pink tone is given by seasons, due to a seaweed called artemisa, which remains in the depths of the saline waters of that place.
The cycle could be repeated in the months of August - September, if the weather conditions and the cleanliness generated in the extraction of salt make it possible.
The Mining Agency called the attention of both the community and the Governorate of Bolívar in order to take the necessary measures so as not to affect the ecosystem.
Among the causes of the algae being damaged and dying are the high salinity and the supply of less concentrated brine, hence the call to take care of this tourist attraction.
